BC United statement on Canfor’s plan for new Houston facility

DAWSON CREEK (September 14, 2023) BC United Leader Kevin Falcon and BC United Shadow Minister for Forestry Mike Bernier released the following joint statement in response to Canfor’s recently announced plan to build a new manufacturing facility in Houston, B.C.:

“Canfor’s investment of nearly $200 million to build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Houston is incredibly exciting news, both for the region and the entire forestry sector.

“We are pleased that Canfor is making such a significant investment in Northern B.C. and for demonstrating their confidence in our province’s dedicated forestry workers and resource-dependent communities.

“It has been an incredibly challenging few years in B.C.’s forestry industry, as the NDP government has repeatedly failed to provide support to the sector and lay out a clear plan or vision for it’s future. Today’s announcement is a sign of industry stepping up where government won’t, and we sincerely hope it will prompt long overdue action from the NDP government to recognize the value of our forestry sector and the need to invest in resource industries for the long-term.

“We also want to acknowledge the hard work of Mayor Shane Brienen and council for their steadfast commitment to bringing this important economic driver to their community and the wider region.”
