BC United statement on the NDP’s emergency task force announcement

KAMLOOPS (September 11, 2023) – Todd Stone, Official Opposition House Leader and BC United MLA for Kamloops-South Thompson, and Bruce Banman, Shadow Minister for Emergency Management, Climate Readiness & Citizen Services and BC United MLA for Abbotsford South released the following statement in response to Premier David Eby’s announcement of an “expert task force” to deal with wildfires and other emergencies in B.C.:

“Speaking of wildfires, David Eby’s announcement this morning displays a striking lack of leadership and is out of touch with the realities faced by British Columbians who increasingly have to cope with the impacts of wildfires.

“Instead of taking decisive action to address the growing issue of wildfires and other climate-related disasters in B.C., Eby is engaging in another bureaucratic exercise that will only serve to further delay the changes that people desperately need to see implemented today.

“This NDP government has access to a comprehensive report on B.C’s wildfire response, delivered to them in 2018, and they have yet to implement all of the recommendations. How can they think more reports and investigations will solve this problem when the last one is still collecting dust on their desks?

“If David Eby believes that more bureaucracy is what is needed to address the wildfire response in B.C., then he clearly has never listened to the voices of those on the ground.

“In contrast to Eby’s vague promises and failed action, our BC United Caucus is ready to act. In the coming weeks, we will be bringing forward a detailed action plan on wildfire mitigation, response, and recovery. The time for talk is over — it’s time for real action to keep British Columbians, and their homes, safe.”
