BC United MLA Kirkpatrick introduces bill to strengthen protections for victims of gender-based violence

VICTORIA (May 15, 2024) – With David Eby’s NDP government failing to have a victim and trauma-informed approach to publication bans, BC United Shadow Minister for Gender Equity and Inclusion, MLA Karin Kirkpatrick, has introduced a private member’s bill to address this critical gap.

“This bill is about giving survivors of gender-based violence the power to make informed decisions,” said MLA Kirkpatrick. “By aligning provincial actions with the federal Bill S-12, this legislation ensures that survivors of sexual assault are fully informed of their rights regarding publication bans, giving them a voice and a choice to talk about their cases.”

Based on recommendations from the advocacy group My Voice My Choice, this legislation requires provincial justice system personnel, such as police officers, to inform survivors of sexual assault if a publication ban applies to their case and how to revoke or vary that ban. By amending the provincial Victims of Crime Act, this legislation will ensure that victims of sexual offences have a voice and a choice in whether publication bans apply to their cases.

“BC United is firmly in favour of strengthening protections for victims of gender-based violence and defending their rights. I call on Premier David Eby to pass this legislation as soon as possible,” said Kirkpatrick.
